International Week Against Disappearances - Events Summary
The public meeting on Mass Graves and Disappearances held in London on the 31st of May 2011 signed the conclusion to the series of events organised by ICAD (British section) for the International Week Against Disappearances. In this meeting speakers from Tamil Eelam, Kurdistan, Baluchistan and Colombia gave to the audience an update on recent happenings in their respective countries, with particular attention to the discovery of new mass graves.

The opening event of the series has seen ICAD participating in the "2nd Mullivaikal Remembrance Event" organised to commemorate the massacre of Tamils (Mullivaikal) in 2009. Together with the Colombia Solidarity Campaign, ICAD took part in the pickets in front of the London Business School and the London School of Economics, to protest against former president of Colombia (invited by these schools), Álvaro Uribe Vélez, accused of crimes against humanity, corruption and human rights violations.
What are Disappearances?
What are Disappearances?
Disappearances are a special form of violence by the state against the people. A disappearance occurs when a person is arrested or detained without that detention being admitted by the state authorities, and without any information being given to the family or friends of the missing person. One of the huge horrors for the family of the disappeared is, not knowing the whereabouts of their loved ones, or even whether they are alive or dead.
ConferencesICAD tries to co-ordinate and organise the struggle against disappearances on international level. For this purpose we organised international conferences in countries where disappearances still occur or where the backers of this violation are situated. ICAD is aware that disappearances are an international problem and that multi national companies play a significant role.
Foundation of ICAD and its struggleFoundation of ICAD The foundation of the International Committee Against Disappearances (ICAD) is indivisibly linked with the brave struggle of the family of the revolutionary Hasan Ocak, who was disappeared in Istanbul on the 21st of March 1995.
